15 Minutes with Paulina Porizkova
A force to be reckoned with, Paulina Porizkova achieves the rare trifecta of confidence, sensuality and everlasting effortless style.
An unforgettable follow up from our ICONS debut, this second chapter focuses on the ageless female form, with Paulina its champion. Immortalised through an edit of disruptive designs, assured poses and an attitude of ebullient joy that penetrates beyond the screen, the bold use of colour, characterising each individual piece, emanates this mood. Candid, empowered and a proud feminist, The Power of Paulina is one that embodies the confident Karen Millen woman.
Whilst on set, we were able to take fifteen minutes for an exclusive, behind the scenes conversation with Paulina Porizkova on the importance of ageless beauty, her favourite pieces from the collection and the secret to Paulina’s power.
You’re the perfect ambassador for ageless beauty. Why is this so important to you?
I would say it’s because I’m ageless – but no, actually I’m 57. I do have an age, and it’s important to me to be an ambassador for ageless beauty because women like myself, in our 50’s and 60’s, are very sadly underrepresented in the media.
I don’t feel invisible – some people would like to treat me as invisible, but I refuse to be invisible. That’s why it’s important for me to speak up and say look at me – I’m still here.
Can you share the secret to your confidence?
Here’s the real secret – I’m totally not confident at all! Some days I do wake up confident – at my age I know who I am, I know what I like, I know what I’m good at and I know where I need help.
What advice would you give to women who feel constrained with their age?
Look at it this way. If you’re older – you’re lucky! Make the best of it and appreciate every year because you’re one year smarter, one year better, and in my opinion – one year more beautiful.
What has been the highlight of your years as an icon so far?
In my 57 years there have been many highlights and many lowlights, I think one of the real highlights has been the ability to understand when to appreciate the highlights, and that the lowlights actually make the highlights brighter. There would be no stars in the sky if there wasn’t a black sky surrounding them.
Where are you most at home?
With people I love.
How would you define your personal style?
Style to me is knowing exactly who you are and being comfortable with who you are, wearing what suits you and looks good.
What are your three favourite pieces from the edit?
I love the metallic chain top and blazer combination, the top on its own makes me feel sexy. I also really like the little sequin blue mermaid dress and golden mesh dress – it’s kind of fun to be hot when you’re 57 and everyone has told you that you should have shut it down!
