A firm believer in embracing the joy of dressing up at every age, actor and producer Nicole Ari Parker is the latest KM Power Woman and also the face of THE ICONS VOL. VI. In a compelling conversation, Nicole touches upon the obstacles she has faced in her career and how she navigates fashion in her fifties.
“I just wear what I like, when I want to wear it, how I want to wear it and I think it's a part of self-care, really. Fashion at any age, being yourself as much as you can in this world.” - Nicole Ari Parker
How do you resonate with your character on ‘And Just Like That’?
“I think that what's really special about this role is that everyone in New York has a relative like LTW or has a business with an LTW or owns a gallery with an LTW, but you just never see her on television represented, so I think it was a breath of fresh air, for a lot of New Yorkers especially.”
How do you stay authentic to yourself while keeping up with current trends?
“You know, I think this is one of the reasons I like a brand like Karen Millen, because even with all of my drama and the way that I like to dress or accessorise, my family, my dad especially, raised me to have a nice coat, a proper brogue, proper bag from my mom. There are some things that are just staple, and I think that's the through line in my style, that a good trench coat is very important to have. Even if you're wearing a micro mini dress underneath, the trench coat should stand the test of time.”
When it comes to occasionwear, what styles are you drawn to?
“For a special occasion, that's when I go full out, if you tell me it's a party or festive event, to go for it. I love a gorgeous flower in the middle of the dress, some kind of ornate detail that's dripping off the dress. I save it all up for that invitation.”
