A Note From The Founder | January

I think workwear perhaps has a different connotation now compared to what it did back in the '90s. We are far more relaxed about how we dress, and I think this is great as it gives us much more to play with. However, me being me, there will always be a certain amount of structure and tailoring to my choices, and I’m pleased to see that there does seem to be a return to a more polished look for some. I feel that has always been at the heart of Karen Millen as a brand. Ultimately, for me, workwear just needs to look polished and well put together, as looking good is feeling good, and in turn, it helps us perform at a higher level.

How to balance functionality with style for the workplace?

This depends on the type of job you are doing, but that’s another good reason for me to generally wear trousers. I think layering is also useful as it allows you to change the look by taking off pieces; for example, you could be wearing a jacket and trousers over a shirt and jumper. The jacket removes to allow more movement and then you can go one step further by taking off the jumper and tying it around your waste, even roll up your sleeves on the shirt if your work requires you to be a lot more relaxed. If you have a meeting, you can just pop the jacket back over the shirt for a smarter, more formal look.

What key piece should everyone have in their workwear wardrobe for 2025?

If you can only change a couple of pieces for your workwear wardrobe, a good shirt and a piece of knitwear will help freshen up your working wardrobe, but if you can afford it, then one new piece of tailoring would be my go-to each season. I think for this time of the year I would invest in a colour that is hot for the season, so definitely deep aubergines and browns.

What’s your go-to office uniform?

Probably tailored trousers and a jacket, not necessarily matching, with a coat over the top at this time of year. I’d style with a lower heel (but something higher to change into if I’m heading out to lunch)!
