What to Wear to Wimbledon

Magical things happen when the sporting world collides with fashion – especially when you have a little sartorial know-how up your (impeccably tailored) sleeve. So, now that summer is officially upon us, our thoughts are racing with outfit plans for this season’s upcoming events. Top priority this month is Wimbledon 2024 – home to world-class sportsmanship, A-list celebrity spotting, and plenty of strawberries and cream. And whilst you pay to watch the matches, we all know the outfit-spotting provides just as much entertainment.

That’s why Karen Millen has curated the ultimate fashion guide to composing your two-week plan of Wimbledon outfit ideas. From streamlined suiting that’s reimagined with feminine allure, to bold jumpsuits infused with high-fashion influence, find your fashion formula from our tried-and-tested Wimbledon winners below.

Wimbledon Dress Code

So, what to wear to Wimbledon? Although there isn’t a published set of rules, the organisers still maintain a strict dress code for those attending. As is to be expected from the oldest tennis tournament in the world, smart dress is generally required – with extra eyes on those frequenting the Centre and Number One Courts. As for the lucky guests who have managed to secure a spot in the Royal Box, arriving in your finest ensemble is a must.

Rather vaguely, the ‘smart casual’ dress code is open to interpretation – except for a strict ban on clothing with large branding or political slogans, sports shorts and other casual athleisure, and torn denim.

How to Dress for Wimbledon

Now that we know the basic do’s and don'ts, let’s break it down a little further. Exactly what do women wear to Wimbledon? Well, whilst the rules are yours to adapt, arriving in a composed, classic ensemble is always going to be a timeless way to take on the tournament.

Previous attendees have also listed some sartorial scenarios that aren’t covered by the organisation’s guidelines. This includes a recommendation to avoid wearing jeans and trainers, as they might be prohibited in some hospitality areas. Classic dresses, jumpsuits, two piece sets, and blouses are ideal for keeping cool and comfortable. In the scenario of heatwave weather, it should come as a relief to know that tailored shorts are permitted – meaning a power dressing two-piece is still on the cards, even in soaring climes.

White Dresses

Achieving simplistic elevation with ladylike ease, the classic white dress is a style formula that works so well when it comes to dresses for Wimbledon. Whether you have an affinity to the mini, midi or maxi, an all-white piece can say so much, all whilst remaining artfully refined. Choose contemporary cut out paneling to display a reimagined take on the dress code, or opt for a bohemian luxe vibe with flowing lengths of linen.

Dresses

If not wanting to commit to the high maintenance of a white dress, but wanting to keep your outfit light and airy in the summer heat, simply opt for a dress in any other colour. While white carries with it the Wimbledon traditions, if you aren’t playing on the courts you need not be overly concerned with the shade you wear. Browse relaxed fit dresses that are ultra easy to sit, stand, and wander around the grounds in, in a huge range of colours, from pastel hues to summery brights.

Blouses

If dresses are not your usual style, a blouse paired with tailored trousers or shorts, or a flowing midi skirt is an equally as appropriate Wimbledon outfit ideal for warm weather and long days outside. Perfect for keeping your shoulders covered in the sun, or providing a little extra coverage if the weather takes a turn, a blouse is an ultra easy way to introduce a splash of colour or a fun print, as well as elevate a look into the “smart casual” category. Alternatively, a waistcoat and matching trousers are ideal for levelled up formality and easy styling that makes an impact.

Jackets

Whilst we’re crossing our fingers and toes for good weather, the odds are we might have to brave a light shower or two – this is the English summertime, after all. Thankfully, a lightweight jacket will provide a layer of protection against the rain, all whilst complementing your overall aesthetic. From lightweight denim to uniquely textured designs, to vibrant blazers that bring with them a burst of sunshine, we are certain to provide the perfect light outer layer for your Wimbledon outfit. We just hope you won’t need to use it!

Shoes

Now for the final question: what shoes to wear to Wimbledon? As long as you’re comfortable, there seems to be no right or wrong answer here. It is generally agreed that sports trainers should not be worn, so lean toward sandals, ballet flats, or loafers for an elevated approach. Days at Wimbledon are long, and you may be doing a lot of walking, so ensure your own comfort by reaching for styles similar to your every day pairs.
