As some previous formalities have relaxed, we’re finding that smart-casual styles are rightfully earning their place in our collection. With this, looser-fitting styles, natural materials and softer tailoring are becoming staples in outfit planning for any occasion. The best pieces are the ones that you can interchange between off-duty styling and workwear alike.
What is smart casual?
Smart casual is a semi formal dress code, generally made up of pieces that combine on-trend, relaxed items, and professional pieces. Whether heading to the office, to a dinner date, or meeting friends, a smart casual outfit brings with it a timeless and elevated level of elegance.
What is the difference between smart casual and casual?
The biggest difference between a smart casual dress code and a casual one, is the level of formality. Smart casual calls for elevated pieces, tailored separates, pieces you would wear to work or out on an evening. Casual dress codes generally have no rules, just wear whatever is comfortable!
I prefer a more gender neutral style. How should I dress for a smart casual dress code?
For gender neutral smart casual dressing, whether you are non binary or just lean away from the classic dresses and skirts, you can never go wrong with tailored separates. Break up a tailored co-ord set by pairing a blazer and blouse or button up shirt with clean jeans, or style a pair of tailored trousers with a crisp T-shirt or bodysuit. A nicely tailored blazer or pair of trousers are appropriate for almost any event.
What is considered smart casual for a woman?
Choose items such as:
Tops
When it comes to smart casual tops, almost anything goes. The styling is what takes a top from casual to smart casual, so if wearing jeans opt for a blouse or button up shirt. Layer a blazer or tailored coat over the top for an extra touch of formality. Wear a crisp T-shirt with tailored trousers and pointed toe heels for a clean, classic look that is as simple as it is effective.
Skirts and Dresses
Opt for a knee length at minimum. Midi and maxi skirts are wardrobe staples ideal for smart casual dress codes and events, as they can easily be styled with T-shirts, bodysuits, and blouses. The same rule applies for dress lengths. Experimenting with prints and colours is certainly allowed, and silhouettes should keep you comfortable and covered. Avoid leg splits that are dramatically high, but they are certainly allowed to add a personal edge and encourage easy movement in slim fits!
Trousers
Similarly to tops, smart casual trouser choices are dependent on what is being worn on your top half. Tailored wide leg trousers always provide a dramatic silhouette appropriate for the office - and post-work plans. Failsafe jeans, usually in a dark wash with no distressing, also work for smart casual plans, as long as they are paired with an elevated top option and shoes such as slingbacks, kitten heels, or polished boots.
Shoes and Boots
When it comes to smart casual footwear, opt for polished options such as pointed toe heels, slingbacks, and boots. Loafers also make for ideal smart casual shoes. Steer clear from party shoes such as strappy heels, highly embellished pieces, and platform heels, and avoid trainers or casual sandals like flip flops. Generally the rule is if you could wear them to the office, you can wear them to any smart casual event!

Ultra Revealing Outfits
Super short skirts or dresses may not be appropriate for the occasion, but if styled with a top with more coverage could certainly pass for smart casual. The same goes for tops - a low neckline is okay, but style it with trousers or a longer skirt for balance.
Strapless or Strappy Designs
Tops with a bandeau neckline, spaghetti straps, or halter necklines may not be seen as formal enough for a smart casual dress code. Remember the rule “if you would wear it to the office, you can wear it to a smart casual event”.
Forgetting Your Styling
Often, we focus so much on the outfit itself that we forget about shoe options and accessories. Inject some personality with your jewellery choices, and add a pair of shoes that elevate the look.
Going Too Formal
If you wear an entirely tailored outfit with heels and formal styling, your outfit may start to veer on the side of formal, rather than smart casual. Don’t overthink your look, just maintain a balance between casual pieces and more formal items.
