Wool should always be considered as a fabric for the cold seasons, as its natural makeup makes for a long lasting, durable fabric resistant to the elements. Read on to learn about the benefits of wool clothing, and browse our top picks of wool coats, tops, dresses, and more.
Is wool a good fabric for cold weather?
Wool has been used for centuries as a fabric ideal for cold weather dressing. Its fibres have a natural ability to trap air, keeping heat close to the body. Surprisingly however, wool is brilliantly breathable and moisture absorbing, so despite its thick, plush feel, it never feels stuffy.
Are wool coats good for rain?
Wool coats are good for showery days, but should not be worn in a relentless downpour. It is known as a hygroscopic fibre, meaning it is great at absorbing moisture from the air. In fact, wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water without feeling damp at all, due to the wave structure of the individual fibres.
Is wool a durable fabric?
Wool is ultra durable, both resistant from damage from the environment around them, and from everyday wear. It is resistant against water, flame, mould and mildew, and odours, so will certainly stand the test of time from season to season. As well as this, it is also resistant to wrinkles if hung properly after wear, so is always ready to wear.
Merino wool specifically has coiled fibres that spring back into shape after wearing, and are able to absorb UV radiation and protect from the sun as a result of this.
How do you keep a wool coat in good condition?
After wearing, it is a good idea to run over the garment with a lint roller or suede brush to remove any dirt from the day and pick up any loose fibres that will otherwise begin to pill.
Wool can be hand washed or machine washed (on a wool setting or delicate setting), but do not tumble dry or iron, as this can impact the integrity of the fibres. Air dry by laying flat on a surface or across a drying rack.
Often, simply airing out a wool garment can bring it back to life.
Of course, wool can be used for any garment, not just coats! From slinky dresses to flowing skirts, cardigans to tailored shirts, wool is a timeless investment in your wardrobe that can be worn year after year. See below for our top picks of wool pieces.
